Development Director

What You Can Expect

The Director of Development will be responsible for the development of utility scale battery storage projects across California with an emphasis on locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Basin. In this role you will be leading development efforts on portions of the Company’s ~9 GW existing positions, greenfield development, and project acquisition. Efficiently communicate complex development situations, and work through development issues from the start of development through construction. Travel as necessary for siting, development and commercial activities as required to keep development on track.

 

Every day in this role you will be responsible for managing and supporting permitting, site control, interconnection matters, power marketing, design/Engineering, Procurement, Construction “EPC”, financing, and other matters critical to the development of energy storage projects throughout California.

 

  • Manage/analyze information flow relevant to project development from internal subject matter experts and external consultants and vendors
  • Ownership of project inputs/assumptions and coordinating updates with respective internal groups
  • Manage project level progress, risks, opportunities, and economics while providing thoughtful analysis and risk evaluation
  • Drive decisions and prioritize allocation of resources based on a deep understanding of schedule dependencies and financial impacts
  • Maintain a rigorous understanding of the overall state of the energy storage market in California, including regulatory and competitive matters, to inform development decisions
  • Track project progress through key development milestones, managing schedules and budgets, and coordinating across disciplines within the Company
  • Manage and/or support due diligence activities for acquisitions
  • Manage negotiation of lease/purchase options and agreements for site control
  • Coordinate engineering activities in pursuit of permits and as required for interconnection matters
  • Work closely with engineering team in support of design and EPC process

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor Degree in Business, Construction, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Environmental, Science, Management, or another Analytical field required
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant work experience and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in energy storage or renewable energy development, with experience in project management, permitting, offtake negotiation, interconnection, California Environmental Quality Act “CEQA”, planning, real estate, and other matters critical to development in California
  • Demonstrated success and experience developing utility scale energy storage and/or renewable energy projects in California
  • Familiarity with relevant state, county and city codes, procedures and regulations required by local planning and building departments
  • Experience preparing, negotiating, and closing commercial agreements including development agreements, site control agreements, consulting and service agreements, interconnection, and power sales agreements
  • Ability to manage a large workload across a large portfolio, while prioritizing tasks and effectively managing competing deadlines
  • Detailed understanding of the CAISO market with particular focus on interconnection, regulatory and offtake matters
  • Ability to evaluate development status and efficiently inform critical decision making with management

 

Additional Details

  • This role is eligible for our hybrid work policy; and can work remotely until we open the San Francisco, CA office
  • Must be available to travel domestically up to 30% of the time with the need for some overnight trips

Compensation

Salary Range: $146,300 – $224,135 USD annually

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

Actual offered salary may depend on geography, experience, industry knowledge, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

 Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide reliable and accurate financial and management advice.

Detailed Description

Financial & Operational Strategy:

  • Create and continuously refine country finance strategy.
  • Negotiate a pipeline of local currency debt to safeguard receivables against forex depreciation.
  • Own the country financial model, using it to forecast EBITDA targets and the impact of strategy decisions on business performance.
  • Ensure a line-by-line budget & forecast by all departments and support preparation where required.
  • Support and drive maintenance/achievement of financial sustainability by guaranteeing:
    • 100% Punctual Funding vs Budget to support business operations.
  • Manage and analyze Cash-Flow and working capital requirements by:
    • Understanding the source and uses of cash and maintain integrity of funds received/generated.
    • Cash-flow forecasting to determine acceptable levels of trending balances.
    • Actively liaise with other teams for critical funding needs and shortage risks.
    • Monitor and control accurate records of receivables, safe inventory levels and negotiate favorable credit terms with local suppliers. 
  • Continually monitor and refine the effectiveness of country financial strategies, gathering evidence in the process to inform the commercial strategy. 

Business Performance, Financial and Management Reporting

  • Understand the business model for generating customer value and translates the operational metrics into measures for performance using dashboards and financial statement ratio analysis.
  • Prepare management accounts and provide insights on deviations to budget, commentary on periodic performance and support Country Director with tactical moves accordingly.
  • Generate both regular and ad hoc insights for action so that the business can maintain excellent financial health:
  • Work closely with department heads to understand monthly expenses referring to the budget vs Actuals , monitor spending and drive efficiencies in cost centers.

Tax and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with local tax requirements and timely submission of all tax returns.
  • Ensure efficient tax structures are in place and are properly administered.
  • Keep abreast of changes in relevant local regulatory environment and communicates major changes to the group.
  • Ensure company compliance for all financial record control including real estate contracts and leases.
  • Keep tax non-compliance risk as low as possible by proactive education and documentation review, approval, and accounting.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop relationships with relevant actors and maintain networks throughout the business environment.
  • Work closely with the following stakeholders to provide strategic finance and administrative support as needed
  • Develop and maintain mutual beneficial business relationships to assist, protect and enhance the company’s image in the community which includes Tax Authorities, External Auditors, Banks, Regulatory Bodies, Shareholders, Lawyers, Insurance and Brokers Entities, and any other relevant to the business.

Governance & Risk

  • Internal control maintenance, identification, profiling and reporting potential risks as well as propose and implement mitigation plans.
  • Ensures financial audits are completed in time and statutory books closing occurs as appropriate.
  • Responds to Auditor queries effectively and communicated any significant matters to the Country Director.
  • Ensure adherence to financial spending policies and procedures.
  • Procurement principles in place to ensure value for money.

People Management & Leadership

  • Ensure the department is adequately staffed for execution of financial functions.
  • Build and provide inspiring leadership to a high performing finance team
  • Supervises the activities of the direct reports and ensure quality, service and compliance standards are met and that finance operations run efficiently and effectively to support the business operations.
  • Facilitates training where required to build and develop team’s capacity.

As the Software Engineering Director, in Houston, TX or Oakland, CA for ENGIE FlexGen (Flexible Generation including Storage, Thermal and Hydrogen) North America you will be responsible for contributing to and the implementation of the technical roadmap, leadership and supervision of the software engineering group.   • Must keep up to date on new technologies and regulatory conditions including codes, industry standards, best practices, customer requirements, and other relevant standards

Job Purpose/Mission

The Head of Commercial will play a critical role in ENGIE Energy Access Kenya (EEAK). As the Head of Commercial, you are responsible for developing and implementing Sales, Marketing & Business Development (Partnerships) strategies to accelerate growth with our current and new while maintaining strong customer repayments. You are also expected to identify new commercial opportunities, manage marketing efforts and coordinate the execution of market research and analysis to create business plans based on commercial opportunities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Set and manage the overarching strategic direction, priorities and focus areas for sales commercial (sales, marketing, and business development), cascading and ensuring alignment throughout EEAK
  • Manage consolidated country commercial performance with keen focus on driving overall customer repayments given that 99% of the sales are on credit and the team core responsibilities for pushing credit sales outcomes.
  • Establish a best-in-class commercial operating model, with a high-impact and right-sized organizational structure, tools, reports, standards, and systems
  • Lead our go-to-market strategy through understanding our customers, the market, and competitive landscape then determining competitive positioning with regards to products, prices, channels, and locations
  • Develop and lead a team commercial team (including regional Managers) on a local, regional and national level, with full responsibility for the team's work plan, coaching, and professional development
  • Lead and oversee strategic projects to improve commercial performance

 

Detailed Responsibilities

1. Strategy, Planning & Budgeting

  • Set and manage the overarching strategic direction, priorities, and focus areas for commercial across EEAK over the short to long-term and drive efficient customer acquisition and revenue growth throughout EEAK
  • Create robust plans to deliver the country targets month on month on month, including allocating sufficient investment and resources to reliably execute
  • Develop our go-to-market strategy (locations, distribution channels, marketing, partnerships)
  • Collaborating with cross-functionally peers to determine other key strategic inputs (e.g., product Volume, pricing, CX, etc.)
  • Ensure regions have localized strategies in line with the country strategy
  • As part of the management team, provide thought partnership for cross-functional leads, provide input into strategies, act as a key stakeholder on cross-functional decisions and ensure that core commercial and enabling functions to align with the sales strategy
  • Develop the sales, marketing, and business development team budgets, and track departmental expenditures, financial goals, and budgets
  • Where required, both lead and oversee strategic commercial projects to drive sales growth across EEAK


2. Governance, Reporting, Analytics & Performance Management

  • Continuously manage country Sales and customer repayment performance, including:
  • Primary focus on revenue, though sales volumes, kit mix, and price
  • Focus on maximizing sales of higher-margin products withs with a lower COGS
  • Focus on Customer repayment and Collection Rates, given sales team core responsibilities for credit sales outcomes.
  • Oversee the development of reports, analysis, and insights for commercial performance and other operational KPIs (per sales manager/agent, active agents) and marketing (brand health, marketing spends, referrals, etc.)
  • Lead commercial governance forums and hold Zonal/Regional Managers and other commercial sectional heads accountable for results and plans
  • Where there is underperformance, provide hands-on support to turnaround and make key decisions to remediate performance
  • Continuously monitor performance of other key functions that drive sales, including product, pricing, sales, distribution, portfolio health, customer experience, software, and service with potential partners, working with them to take remediation action to address underperformance

 

3. Commercial Operations

  • Develop procedures and policies for core sales operations functions (lead and opportunity management, recruitment and training, tools of the trade, incentives, size, and structure, government reporting and performance management, etc.)
  • Implement procedures and policies throughout the sales function, monitor and ensure compliance, continually test and improve.
  • Lead and manage marketing operations, including:
  • Lead market research, including the market and competitive landscape to identify analyze threats and opportunities
  • Segment EEA Kenya's customers and develop tailored strategies to target
  • Identify trends in customer behavior closely following sales, product usage, customer retention, upgrades, and competitors, leveraging this data to enhance our commercial strategy
  • Supervise all marketing channels and methods to ensure appropriate information is effectively communicated to external audiences (including leading campaigns)
  • Establish and manage external partnerships, including negotiating ongoing contracts with suppliers and customers, managing, and reviewing contracts, and making recommendations regarding commerciality.

 

4. Leadership, Management & Culture

  • Develop and lead a team of sales and commercial managers and analysts, including full responsibility for coaching and their professional development
  • Manage the team's work plan and workload to ensure delivery of agreed goals
  • Help recruit, collaborate with, coordinate, and train diverse teams such as Marketing and especially field sales and credit teams.
  • Provide strong leadership, management and coaching for regional sales teams, including with support to other members of the Management Team

 

Experience + Knowledge and Skills

  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience in progressive business leadership experience, with 3+ years leading a Commercial function (Particularly Renewable Energy, FMCG's, MNO & Financial Institutions).
  • Strong Commercials capability across Sales and Marketing particularly in B2C, with a demonstrated history of leading and delivering strong commercial results.
  • Outstanding leadership, having led large field- based sales teams and ability to create a performance culture with strong governance, accountability and results.
  • Strong understanding of the Kenya Commercial environment, ideally with time spent in Various regions throughout Kenya.
  • General strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to set and communicate the strategic vision for commercial throughout the whole organization.
  • Ability to lead high impact cross functional strategic commercial projects end to end (Including planning, analysis, conclusions and implementation) to achieve results.
  • Exceptional judgement and decision-making skills, with the ability to independently assess and take action to achieve results.
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and communications skills, with the ability to develop relationships with Key functional leads (especially Customer Finance, Customer Experience and Operations) but also with external strategic commercial partners.

What You Can Expect

  • Every day you work with business developers and subject matter experts to develop the design documents and drawings for Electrical Energy Storage Systems connected to high voltage utility grid, to be used in project permit applications and engineering procurement construction (EPC) sourcing
  • Develop site layouts for Electrical Substations and Battery Energy Storage facilities
  • Create Electrical Diagrams for medium voltage and low voltage power networks and communication systems
  • Review EPC drawings and provide constructive feedback

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Associate’s Degree in Drafting/Design or Engineering Technology; or related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in electrical installations design utilizing AutoCAD; other CAD will be considered

Compensation

The Project Development Advisor will be responsible for the development of utility scale battery storage projects across the market. In this role you will support the development of existing pipeline, new greenfield development, and project acquisition.   • Manage/analyze information flow relevant to project development from internal subject matter experts and external consultants/vendors
  • Ownership of project inputs/assumptions and coordinating updates with respective internal groups
  • Manage project level progress, risks, opportunities, and economics while providing thoughtful analysis and risk evaluation
  • Drive decisions and prioritize allocation of resources based on a deep understanding of schedule dependencies and financial impacts
  • Maintain a rigorous understanding of the overall state of the energy storage market in CAISO, including regulatory and competitive matters, to inform development decisions
  • Track project progress through key development milestones, managing schedules and budgets, and coordinating across disciplines within the Company
  • Manage and/or support due diligence activities for acquisitions
  • Manage negotiation of lease/purchase options and agreements for site control
  • Coordinate engineering activities in pursuit of permits and as required for interconnection matters
  • Work closely with engineering team in support of design and EPC process

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor Degree in Business, Construction, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Environmental, Science, Management, or another Analytical field required
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ relevant work experience  and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in CAISO or other Independent System Operator “ISO” with energy storage or renewable energy development, with experience in project management, permitting, offtake negotiation, interconnection, planning, real estate, and other matters critical to development
  • Demonstrated success and experience developing utility scale energy storage and/or renewable energy projects, within CAISO or other ISO
  • Familiarity with relevant state, county and city codes, procedures and regulations required by local planning and building departments
  • Experience preparing, negotiating, and closing commercial agreements including development agreements, site control agreements, consulting and service agreements, interconnection, and power sales agreements
  • Ability to manage a large workload across a large portfolio, while prioritizing tasks and effectively managing competing deadlines
  • Detailed understanding of the CAISO market or other ISO with particular focus on interconnection, regulatory and offtake matters
  • Ability to evaluate development status and efficiently inform critical decision making with management

  • You develop and consolidate all generator technical information and know-how within EMS by participating to internal and external networks and by ensuring processes are adapted adequately.

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent by experience
