Non Destructive Testing Expert - New applications Research

Posting date : 14/10/2024

Requisition ID : 35554

Non Destructive Testing Expert - New applications Research

Linkebeek, Brussels, Belgium – Non Destructive Testing

Are you excited about embarking on a journey with us towards a carbon-neutral world?

We are seeking a collaborative colleague who is passionate about making a positive impact on ENGIE Laborelec's success and overall performance. If you have a deep interest in the energy transition, power generation and technology, we urge you to explore this opportunity.

Bring your expertise, grow with us and build your career in a safe and diverse environment.

Who are we?

ENGIE Laborelec is a research and expertise centre focused on electrical power technology, with a team of over 380 employees from different backgrounds. We are part of the ENGIE Group, and more particularly the entity ENGIE Research & Innovation. We support the entire electricity value chain, providing customized solutions to a diverse range of customers from various fields and industries. We are dedicated to achieving a net zero carbon future and finding sustainable solutions.

About the team

Our Non Destructive Testing team performs the following tasks:

  • Researching, at the customer's request, new developments in techniques and the testing of certain applications using both conventional NDT methods and alternative techniques such as hyperspectral imaging, thermography, fibre-optics etc. for industrial applications (around 40%);
  • Developing our own inspection techniques for very specific niche applications (around 20%);
  • Assisting with Root Cause Analyses, whether on site, in our laboratory or as demanded (around 20%);
  • Monitoring the quality control of NDT inspections carried out by third parties (around 20%), mainly for larger (nuclear) power plants.

In our acceleration towards a carbon-neutral society, NDT related questions for renewable assets are expected to rise, requiring knowledge and insights in, for example, typical flaws in composites, polymer materials and Additive Manufactured materials ... An increase in the demand for more specialised NDT, like robotized inspections is also expected.

What you’ll be doing

Your responsibilities as NDT Expert – New Applications Research  (F/M/X)

  • You participate largely  in the research and development of our own inspection techniques , although assistance with the other operational tasks will also be required from time to time.
  • You will work on both research-oriented projects for ENGIE R&I, EU, ESA and more practical-oriented projects relating to national and international assignments for nuclear power plants, conventional power plants and renewable energy parks.
  • As a project leader, you will coordinate (both technically and organizationally) the tasks assigned to you. This involves drawing up a schedule, managing budgets and monitoring the technical progress and quality.
  • You will also deal with customers: developing a task's scope, preparing an offer, and maintaining close contact while the project is being performed and afterwards.
  • You will help to design and develop solutions to our customers' NDT problems and will keep abreast of new developments in the field.
  • You will carry out projects assigned to the team, whether theoretical (studies) or practical (laboratory or on site).

To fill this role we are looking for a team player who is not afraid to accept new challenges and solve non-standard NDT issues. An out-of-the-box mindset will be highly beneficial.

You will work alongside a supportive team, and will have access to professional development opportunities to help you grow in your career.

If you identify with any of the following, we encourage you to apply!

Do you have?

  • An Engineering degree or a PhD with at least 2 years' experience in non-destructive testing.
  • Knowledge of Ultrasonic Testing
  • Team player instincts, sharing experience and knowledge with colleagues and asking for help when appropriate.
  • Good analytical skills and  enjoy solving problems in a creative way.
  • Proficiency, in English, with a willingness to learn Dutch or French.
  • The ability to travel for on-site work and attend seminars, both locally and internationally.

Additional valuable experiences: laser UT, fiber optic monitoring, hyperspectral imaging, Structural Health Monitoring, thermography, robotics, knowledge of composite materials, polymers, concrete or Additive Manufactured materials (typical flaws), ISO9712 qualifications in conventional NDT techniques and  Nuclear clearance are all a plus.

Here's a taste of what Laborelec offers you

  • Flexible Working Environment: A green campus and hybrid workspace (3 days home working/week) offering flexibility for a good work/life balance.
  • Employee Resource Groups: An exciting position in a prominent research and expertise center, with the possibility of further career development within ENGIE.
  • An inspiring work environment: Shared with bold colleagues from different backgrounds.
  • Learning & Development: Growth is a big reason people choose to join our team. We provide opportunities through “lunch and learn” programs, training, coaching, mentorship programs, and other workshops.
  • Benefits: 34 leave days, 5 days free care for sick children, linen ironing service...
  • Wellness: You will have access to our fun room and fitness space for your enjoyment and well-being.

Where we work

Our headquarters is based in Belgium (Linkebeek, near to Brussels), and we have several branches in Europe (France, Germany & the Netherlands), LATAM (Chile) and MESCAT (KSA & UAE).

Our values : The 4B’s

  • Be You, at Laborelec, we encourage you to be yourself and allow your skills and knowledge to shine through.
  • Be Safe, keeping our employees safe is our top priority.
  • Become, as a Laborelec employee, you can build your career.

The "Core and Fuel Studies" Group within the “Nuclear Processes" Competence Centre is a multidisciplinary team working both on the nuclear fuel and the preparation of the dismantling activities. As such the Core & Fuel Studies Group is in charge of the Tractebel activities related to the fuel cycle, core design, safety evaluation and core operational support for nuclear reactors for the Belgian Utility.  The team performs criticality and shielding calculation for the spent fuel, as well as activation calculations in support of the waste characterization in preparation of the dismantling activities.
To manage these activities the group is subdivided into three operational subgroups:
i)   Cycles Studies, incorporating Cycle Studies activities
ii)  Neutronic studies & Tools: incorporating all activities related to Criticality, Shielding, Activation, Residual Heat and Fuel Data Base(s)
iii) Core Multiphysics, Methods & Support, encompassing cross-cutting activities and common projects within the range of Core & Fuel Studies expertise

Your key responsibilities

The team is currently looking for a Design Engineer.

While focused on neutron studies, the job includes a wide range of applications:

  • Engineering studies in the domain of core and fuel physics using industry-standard methods and simulation codes;
  •  Neutron activation studies;
  • Radiation transport and shielding calculations;
  • Spent fuel characterization;
  • Fluence, source terms and decay heat calculations;
  • Safety-criticality assessments;
  • Various neutronic studies related to spent fuel casks;
  • Writing Engineering / synthesis reports of your analyzes.

We would love to hear from people with

  • You have a good theoretical background of nuclear systems and core physics phenomena.
  • You are keen to develop a technical expertise and ready to invest yourself in the physics simulation codes and methods.
  • You're eligible to obtain authorization of the competent authorities to work with Monte Carlo code. A practical proficiency in neutronics and Monte Carlo calculations would be an asset.
  • You have proficiency in IT (with an emphasis python programming), or are willing to learn this quickly.
  • You are fluent in Dutch or French, with a good knowledge of English. And you are able to use these languages to write clear technical synthesis reports and for easy communication.
  • You are a civil specialized in nuclear energy or nuclear physics

Who you are
