What You Can Expect

ENGIE Global Energy Management and Sales (GEMS) is responsible for managing the portfolio of electricity, natural gas, environmental products, and bulk commodities for ENGIE and its external clients, on an international level. The Risk team within GEMS is responsible for the measurement, control, and reporting of all market-based activities as well as the strategic management of risk capital across these activities, notably the trading & portfolio management activities of Global Energy Management (GEM), the Business to Business (B2B) Retail Supply organization and the Renewable Assets owned by ENGIE North America.

 

As a Market Risk Advisor in Houston, you will work with Commercial and Risk teams to provide analytical, market insight and strategy support focused on evaluating various risk management strategies and optimizing Profit & Loss (P&L) within the risk mandates.

 

Your daily responsibilities will include a combination of regular and ad-hoc tasks including among others risk assessment of origination deals and investments; evaluating regulatory and market changes, updating models and analyses, and responding to requests from Front-Office and other Global Business Units on portfolio and risk impacts.

 

  • Develop, enhance and maintain tools, methodologies and reports that evaluate pricing and risk assessment of various commercial transactions  
  • Perform periodic and ad-hoc analysis; Propose, evaluate, and validate commercial strategies that manage the value / risk balance of the various retail supply / renewable energy portfolios (power, gas, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)) managed by GEMS and other GBUs (Global Business Units) individually and collectively (e.g. reducing basis risk, managing intermittency, etc.)
  • Collaborate and participate in knowledge sharing with various stakeholders and Expertise Centers (e.g. Risk, Expertise Center- Markets, Assets & Supply); support Commercial, Origination  and Business Development activities, offering views on ISO’s market fundamentals (Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), Pennsylvania New Jersey Maryland Interconnection (PJM), Southwest Power Pool (SPP), Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), ISO New England (ISO-NE)), Renewable Energy development and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) pricing opportunities, price vs. renewable production dynamics, etc.
  • Use benchmarking data to support valuation and competitive assessments, and create a benchmarking process to evaluate actions undertaken by front-office
  • Build, maintain and publish internal models for tracking and evaluating asset-specific performance metrics
  • Identify and recommend risk reducing offsets and efficiencies in avoided bid-ask spreads and credit across the ENGIE portfolio
  • Perform economic analyses of structured transactions Economic-Value-Added (EVA) to support Origination & Structuring activities of GEMS front-office and other business units
  • Research and analyze subjects including historical and forward market prices, market fundamentals, customer load analysis, financial forecast variances and advise internal stakeholders in terms of general structuring advice as well as optimization of returns throughout the transaction process
  • Track, collect and synthesize actionable market intelligence
  • Assess impact of regulatory developments on commodity risk positions and provide feedback back to the front office
  • Carry out other duties as assigned

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • A minimum of four-year degree in which you completed courses in an analytical and quantitative discipline (e.g., Engineering, Finance, Economics, Math)
  • A minimum of seven years of general business experience with minimum three years of relevant experience in Competitive Energy Markets, preferably dealing with Renewable assets including BESS and/or Retail Supply books
  • Knowledge of financial derivatives and commodity markets (gas, power, and environmental products)
  • Proficient in data handling, structuring, organizing, processing, and presenting skills (using Advanced Excel+ Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Structured Query Language (SQL), Python, R, or any other data analysis tool)
  • Resourceful with ability to use a variety of tools, data sources, and systems; inherent curiosity to procure and test new resources
  • Experience in the structure, transactions, and protocols of wholesale and retail energy markets ideally under a variety of regulatory systems (familiarity with the minimum of two markets preferred - ERCOT, PJM, SPP, MISO, New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), and NYISO)
  • Knowledge of a portfolio approach to valuation, where assets sit within an integrated value chain
  • Analytical profile, ability to provide precise and solid insights, identify causes and conditions, structure action plans, and propose and defend those to the leadership
  • A focus on deadline-driven project management skills for cross organizational coordination
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy and limited oversight
  • Team player comfortable operating in matrixed structure and managing stakeholder expectations
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to develop cogent reasoning to defend analyses and perspectives

Compensation

Salary Range: $112,000 – $172,500 USD annually

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

What You Can Expect

As the Senior Systems Engineer (SE) is a key player of a diverse team developing cutting-edge energy storage solutions. This position requires technical expertise in battery storage technologies, with focus on lithium-ion batteries. This role includes identifying project requirements, designing battery energy storage systems, specifying system components, supporting the business development team, managing projects from design to operation, and supporting the operations team. This position is part of the Flexible Generation & Retail Global Business Unit (FGBU) in North America. 

 

Every day you will work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SME) to specify suitable system components, define the system design, calculate the size of the battery system throughout the life of the project, and generate comprehensive bills-of-material for material and labor cost evaluation. Additionally, you will manage all technical aspects on project execution, from the design phase through development, installation, commissioning, and operation; primary EPC engineering interface.

 

  • Provide support to internal business team in engaging prospective utility companies and Authority Having Jurisdiction
  • Identify and articulate business development requirements
  • Formulate high-level detailed system design drawings and layouts for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Primary interface with the project Owner’s Engineer
  • Ensure Engie’s BESS internal guidelines are followed
  • Train Operations & Maintenance (O&M) technician and support with troubleshooting system issues
  • Responsible for oversight, considering company policies and procedures, codes and standards, and regulations, of engineering consultants’ and other contractors’ electrical designs and construction as required to deliver the assigned projects
  • Act independently with minimal direction and, as a project team member, must be able to work cooperatively to deliver quality electrical engineering for the project, interconnection agreements, and the team’s goals for a successful project
  • Must keep up to date on new technologies and regulatory conditions including codes, industry standards, best practices, customer requirements, and other relevant standards.
  • Review system drawing sets for purposes of bidding, permitting, and construction in accordance with ENGIE standards, NEC, IEEE and any other local codes

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in renewable systems engineering
  • Extensive expertise in battery technology for storage applications including batteries, inverters, transformers, substations, protection and controls, battery management and energy management systems
  • Profound technical knowledge, particularly in the realm of battery storage technologies or renewable energy systems is a plus.
  • Ability to create, read and interpret construction plans and specifications

What You Can Expect

As the Senior Battery Engineer you will be responsible for leading battery energy storage system (BESS) project design development and the associated project execution engineering support functions. The goals of this position are to continue the development of energy storage power plant design standards, ensure current projects in construction and the development pipeline meet technical and business requirements while maintaining our long-term ownership focus. Additionally, you will bring experience with utility-scale energy storage design as well as the ability to manage complex and time-sensitive projects in a fast-paced environment while communicating effectively.

 

  • Every day, you will ensure the highest level of environmental health and safety (EHS) is incorporated in all electrical engineering and design aspects of BESS projects. You will also serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for energy storage design & engineering
  • Develop and enhance BESS technical specifications for battery enclosures, storage inverters, auxiliary power equipment, and BESS supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system
  • Leading BESS fire protection and safety code compliance reviews Review project specific power purchase agreement (PPA) requirements and develop engineering procurement construction (EPC) technical exhibits
  • Support BESS construction and commissioning to address engineering issues
  • Responsible for selection of electrical engineering consultants when needed to support BESS projects and manage their activities to ensure consistent criteria, cost effective designs and timely delivery
  • Work as the main liaison internally between different stakeholders/ business units- engineering, project development, procurement, to ensure seamless execution of projects
  • Establish and maintain the engineering requirements for all future BESS projects
  • Work collaboratively with the development and procurement teams in sizing and optimizing energy storage systems and augmentation
  • Provide technical support to project development and marketing groups for BESS PPA negotiation/contract execution
  • SME support on battery technology selection and new products
  • Oversee BESS plant design engineering activities and coordinate with “Owners Engineer” to support reviews of 30%, 60%, 90%,  electrical studies, and vendor technical submittals
  • Support the Development group during open houses or public meetings concertation on BESS technical questions

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree or four year degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering; or related field
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in engineering, of which at least three (3) years in energy storage
  • Working experience in battery technology for energy storage applications
  • Knowledge in batteries and battery systems with focus on Lithium technology
  • Understanding of battery degradation and life cycle behavior in relation to BESS use cases
  • Experience in utility-scale ac and dc coupled energy storage power plants
  • Familiarity with medium voltage ac collection and high voltage substation designs
  • Knowledge of energy storage inverters and energy storage technology offerings and suppliers and basic understanding of associated BESS plant electrical studies
  • Familiarity with latest versions of energy storage codes/standards including national fire protection association (NFPA) 855, national electric safety code (NESC)
  • Knowledge of energy storage project integration an associated plant SCADA / control systems
  • Ability to create, read and interpret construction plans and specifications
