Senior Advisor Battery Engineer

What You Can Expect

As the Senior Battery Engineer you will be responsible for leading battery energy storage system (BESS) project design development and the associated project execution engineering support functions. The goals of this position are to continue the development of energy storage power plant design standards, ensure current projects in construction and the development pipeline meet technical and business requirements while maintaining our long-term ownership focus. Additionally, you will bring experience with utility-scale energy storage design as well as the ability to manage complex and time-sensitive projects in a fast-paced environment while communicating effectively.

 

  • Every day, you will ensure the highest level of environmental health and safety (EHS) is incorporated in all electrical engineering and design aspects of BESS projects. You will also serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for energy storage design & engineering
  • Develop and enhance BESS technical specifications for battery enclosures, storage inverters, auxiliary power equipment, and BESS supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system
  • Leading BESS fire protection and safety code compliance reviews Review project specific power purchase agreement (PPA) requirements and develop engineering procurement construction (EPC) technical exhibits
  • Support BESS construction and commissioning to address engineering issues
  • Responsible for selection of electrical engineering consultants when needed to support BESS projects and manage their activities to ensure consistent criteria, cost effective designs and timely delivery
  • Work as the main liaison internally between different stakeholders/ business units- engineering, project development, procurement, to ensure seamless execution of projects
  • Establish and maintain the engineering requirements for all future BESS projects
  • Work collaboratively with the development and procurement teams in sizing and optimizing energy storage systems and augmentation
  • Provide technical support to project development and marketing groups for BESS PPA negotiation/contract execution
  • SME support on battery technology selection and new products
  • Oversee BESS plant design engineering activities and coordinate with “Owners Engineer” to support reviews of 30%, 60%, 90%,  electrical studies, and vendor technical submittals
  • Support the Development group during open houses or public meetings concertation on BESS technical questions

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree or four year degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering; or related field
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in engineering, of which at least three (3) years in energy storage
  • Working experience in battery technology for energy storage applications
  • Knowledge in batteries and battery systems with focus on Lithium technology
  • Understanding of battery degradation and life cycle behavior in relation to BESS use cases
  • Experience in utility-scale ac and dc coupled energy storage power plants
  • Familiarity with medium voltage ac collection and high voltage substation designs
  • Knowledge of energy storage inverters and energy storage technology offerings and suppliers and basic understanding of associated BESS plant electrical studies
  • Familiarity with latest versions of energy storage codes/standards including national fire protection association (NFPA) 855, national electric safety code (NESC)
  • Knowledge of energy storage project integration an associated plant SCADA / control systems
  • Ability to create, read and interpret construction plans and specifications

 

Additional Details

  • This role is eligible for our hybrid work policy
  • Must be available to travel domestically 30% of the time and with the need for some overnight trips
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies 

 

Compensation

Salary Range: $146,300 – $224,135 USD annually

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

Actual offered salary may depend on geography, experience, industry knowledge, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

The “Gas to X” Department of Tractebel Engineering is providing engineering services related to the following energy-related fields: Conventional Thermal Power Plants, Biomass Power Plants, Concentrated Solar Power Plants, Desalination Units, Decarbonisation of Industrial Plants, Carbon Capture and Storage/Usage, Green Hydrogen Production, Synthetic Molecules / Green Fuels Production, LNG-, Natural Gas-Terminals and Pipelines, etc. 

The “Classical Gas” Product is in charge of LNG terminals with its variants, pipelines and conventional gas stations. The piping activities for these are executing:

Your function

For the Gas product, you are in charge of Pipeline engineering studies necessary to design, build gas pipelines; gas compression stations and all what is related to the handling of gas in an industrial environment. The concerned installations cover all natural gas or other special gases (such as H2, CO2,…) transport.

Your role will address mainly the following tasks:

  • Execute feasibilities studies analysing the optimal routing for a pipeline routing considering all aspects of constrains.
  • Integration of the project constraints in the design of the pipeline system.
  • Act as Technical Integrator of complex projects consolidating engineering studies from various disciplines (process, mechanical, electrical, civil, I&C, HSE, etc.)
  • Deliver pipeline engineering services that meet Tractebel’s, its customers' and applicable statutory and regulatory specifications, on time and within budget.
  • Perform technical-economic studies including cost estimates
  • Execute detailed design studies for a chose and frozen pipeline.
  • follow up of the contracting process for these services (bid comparison, technical and economic negotiations, contracting)
  • Evaluate and comment the technical documents issued by contractors and manufacturers
  • Gaining experience in covering basic engineering, detail engineering, procurement, erection, pre-commissioning, commissioning and acquisition of specific knowledge regarding pipelines and gas installations.
  • Managing the contractual and/or financial relations between the various parties involved and the interfaces between all participants in the Projects : Client, Partners, Suppliers, etc.

As the Project Engineer Senior, you will manage the Engineering activities related to design for utility-scale renewables projects (wind, solar, and energy storage) throughout the US and Canada and serve as a main point of contact.

 

Every day, you provide engineering technical input into projects at various stages (from feasibility/ preliminary to detailed design), coordinate Engineering design efforts with EPC or external consultants to review and comment on design submittals in coordination with support from ENGIE subject matter experts (Civil and Electrical) and manage and ensure all deliverables meet Project specifications.   • Review/monitor contractors’ progress and monitor the progress relating to key project milestones

  • Assist procurement in running RFPs and managing the process to sub-contractors
  • Remain up to date on new technologies and regulatory conditions including utility requirements, vendor qualifications, industry best practices, safety standards, and relevant standards development
  • Travel to perform site assessments, design review meetings and due diligence of development engineering throughout the USA and Canada in support of site evaluation and development and permitting activities

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering which you completed courses in civil engineering or electrical engineering or comparable technical knowledge through demonstrated work experience with a solid understanding of power generation plants.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in similar positions, managing renewable energy projects and producing standards, specifications, and documentation.
  • Experience and understanding of the owner’s engineer role
  • Experience and understanding of technical due diligence

Mission 

Are you motivated to board onto our international nuclear trainees program? 
As a nuclear trainee, you will:

  • Discover the world of energy and the challenges of nuclear activities and business;
  • Build a solid network of contacts within Tractebel and ENGIE and share experiences.
  • Learn during a one-year training program alongside your professional work within the technical domain of Hardware Qualification. 

In the context of the operation and lifetime extension of power plants (in Belgium and abroad), a lot of equipment have to be replaced and will be found obsolete. Suitable replacements have to be found and tested to conform to nuclear qualification requirements. Lifetime extension plans have to be defined to demonstrate the capacity of the equipment to go beyond their original lifetime. Furthermore, design upgrade projects required qualification of components to guarantee the safe operation of the plant.

Your job as Hardware Qualification Engineer will consist of:

  • Support to the utilities for the identification of obsolete components (through various methods including: contacts with the original supplier, stock analysis, etc.);
  • Managing contacts with the suppliers to evaluate alternative solutions;
  • Evaluating possible options for re-stocking; 
  • Research of substitute products for obsolete equipment;
  • Validate design changes between original and current equipment regarding nuclear safety;
  • Drafting of specifications and technical requisition files for purchasing of Instrumentation equipment;
  • Follow-up of factory acceptance test and examination of manufacturer records;
  • Meeting experts assigned by Suppliers, Client, Safety Authority...
  • Management of hardware qualification process of instrumentation equipment regarding nuclear safety;
  • Drafting of qualification programs and justifications according to current referential;
  • Evaluation and choice of test laboratories;
  • Placing of orders and follow up of the contract;
  • Follow-up of qualification tests;
  • Drafting and analysis of qualification reports;
  • Presenting and defending hardware qualification in front of the Client and the Belgian nuclear Safety Authority;
  • Performance of technical Audits of suppliers of qualified equipment in Belgium and abroad and draft audit reports;

Profile 

  • Civil/Industrial Engineer (electricity, electronics, electromechanics, …); 
  • Knowledge in electricity and/or instrumentation, quality assurance, standards,… is an asset;
  • Open to quality and safety cultures;
  • +4 years' Experience of professional experience in a similar job in a safety sector (nuclear / industry / railways / aeronautics, …..)
  • Knowledge/interest in the components composing the systems and how they operate;
  • You are able to write technical documents;
  • You are fluent in English, French and/or Dutch;
  • You are open to travel for short assignments abroad.

The working environment

 

Within the Metier Nuclear Safety & Engineering, the groups Safety & Licensing Studies and Safety Implementation & SAR are responsible for the following activities:
Nuclear Safety-related requirement management for the projects;

  • Harmonized safety analyses for multidisciplinary nuclear projects;
  • Support to customers for drafting nuclear licensing and permitting documents;
  • Specific technical expertise, e.g.:
    • Calculation of radiological consequences;
    • Statistical Setpoint Studies;
    • Internal and external hazards studies including definition of the load case;
    • Determination of PIE’s (Postulated Initiating Events – internal or external), importance and prioritisation of PIE’s, choice of DBA’s (Design Basis Accidents);
    • Definition of the classification of systems, structures, components and;
    • Assistance to the client for writing, optimization and compliance of Technical Specifications;
    • Assistance to the client with respect to Integrated Management Systems (IMS);
  • Operational support and training in the various disciplines practiced;
  • Safety Culture : contribute to the understanding and implementation inside TE of nuclear safety principles;

 

 

 

 

Your function

 

As a Nuclear Safety & Licensing Engineer - Confirmed, you will work in several of the following domains: 

  • Safety Officer function within projects: assure the proper consideration of nuclear licensing and safety aspects in studies/projects; establish and manage safety requirements, analyze and ensure compliance with safety requirements, organize safety reviews, contacts with Safety Authorities;
  • Assistance to the client’s nuclear licensing process, including the establishment of associated documents such as PSAR and FSAR (preliminary and final safety assessment report);
  • Safety analysis and assessment, e.g.: classification & qualification requirements with respect to safety functions and items important to safety, radiological consequences studies, internal and external hazards studies including definition of the load case, determination of PIE’s (postulated initiating events) and DBA’s (design basis accidents), statistical setpoint studies;
  • Coordinating and coaching younger colleagues.

Your Profile

  • You have a master degree in Engineering;
  • You are a “generalist”, having knowledge of all technical disciplines within the nuclear domain, enabling you to discuss on safety aspects related to these disciplines;
  • You have minimum 5 years of experience with the general nuclear safety approach and general nuclear licensing preferably within the French or Belgian licensing process;
  • You speak and write French or Dutch on a professional level, and possess a good command of English;  
  • You have a critical and inquiring mind, you are dynamic, rigorous and pragmatic;
  • You have the capacity to develop personal contacts, thanks to your facilitating skills and mature, diplomatic communication;
  • You are able to write position papers and synthesis reports as well as clear safety positions and argumentation;

Che cosa farai?

Riporterai al Project Manager e, in coordinamento con il team, ti occuperai della costruzione di impianti fotovoltaici e impianti di cogenerazione.

 

Quali saranno le tue responsabilità?

  • Supervisionare sul campo le maestranze sub-appaltatrici durante la costruzione civile ed impiantistica avendo cura di far rispettare le lavorazione secondo il cronoprogramma;
  • Verificare che il sub-appaltatore esegua le lavorazioni in ottemperanza alla documentazione progettuale consegnata dall’ingegneria;
  • Verificare che il sub-appaltatore si attenga a tutti gli aspetti inerenti alla sicurezza per la realizzazione delle opere, come riportato sul piano di sicurezza e coordinamento, con la facoltà di interrompere i lavori nel caso in cui non venga rispettato;
  • Elaborare il Giornale di Cantiere su base giornaliera;
  • Partecipare attivamente alle riunioni settimanali di cantiere con CSE, RL e sub-appaltatori;
  • Elaborare il Report di avanzamento del progetto;
  • Redigere i documenti relativi al Dlgs. 81/2008.
