ENGIE shores up its position on the public and school building renovation market

By ENGIE - 05 November 2020 - 12:00

In the Centre-Val de Loire region, ENGIE is to renovate 62 schools and the Fonds régional d’art contemporain (regional contemporary art fund)

On 16 September, representatives of the Centre-Val de Loire region and ENGIE signed a global 15-year energy performance contract designed to renovate the energy systems across 62 schools in the region, as well as its Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (regional contemporary art fund). This ambitious project will cut the energy consumption of these establishments by more than 30%, as well as reducing their CO2 emissions by nearly 35% over the whole contract. With this new contract, ENGIE is continuing to expand its presence on the public and tertiary building energy renovation market by offering comprehensive support and tailor-made packages.

This programme represents a total investment of around EUR 32 million. The renovation works will take two years and will commence at the end of 2020. They will include: insulation of 35,000 m2 of walls; renovating 60% of the boiler plants and 50% of the controlled mechanical ventilation systems (CMVs); a total of 650 systems will be replaced; installation of 1500 m2 of photovoltaic panels on the building roofs. The contract also provides a multi-technical maintenance of facilities and an awareness-raising programme, targeting some 45000 pupils and 5000 members of the administrative and teaching staff to boost their knowledge of energy and environmental issues.

The use of global offers, from design to operation, is progressing in the public and tertiary sectors, with excellent results in terms of energy efficiency. ENGIE’s multi-service expertise – which involves everything from managing the technical and financial arrangements for a project through to day-to-day operation of buildings – establishes it as a leader in this fast- growing market. In France, ENGIE is already renovating and operating numerous school buildings, including 14 secondary schools in Alsace, 201 primary schools and 4 junior schools in Paris, 31 junior schools in the Hauts-de-Seine department and the Paris Cité internationale universitaire. The results achieved so far demonstrate how effective these renovation works are, with 25% to 65% of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

François Bonneau, President of the Centre-Val de Loire region

"This project is in line with the exemplary energy management initiatives that the Centre-Val de Loire region has been implementing for its buildings for nearly 15 years. An initiative bolstered by the regional COP launched in 2019, which sets out to implement local solutions with quantified targets for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions resulting from energy consumption".

Wilfrid Petrie, Executive Vice President of ENGIE, in charge of ENGIE Solutions

“Our challenge at ENGIE is to enable our working environments to be used in a more virtuous fashion and in ways that consume less energy, while at the same time maintaining comfort and quality-of-life for users on a day-to-day basis. To do this, we have a wide selection of effective solutions that we are going to implement across the Centre-Val de Loire region, to significantly cut its energy spending and the greenhouse gas emissions of schools. We are very proud to be able to support the region with this exemplary project”.

About the Centre-Val de Loire region

The Centre-Val de Loire has 97 state-run schools, covering a total of 1.9 million m².

With this new contract introduced alongside one of the first Energy Performance Contracts implemented in France in 2010, and the deployment in 2013 of Regional Energy Operation Teams, the Region has achieved its aim of directly managing schools' energy facilities for the purposes of ensuring service quality and generating energy savings.

Since 2011, the Region has been implementing a programme to renovate its school buildings and has completed €90 million worth of energy improvement work.
